In a shocking display of brazen law-breaking and incredible bravery, a traffic policeman in Jaipur was forced to cling to the bonnet of a speeding truck for nearly half a kilometre after the driver refused to obey his signal. The dramatic incident occurred on Sunday night, highlighting the dangers faced by traffic personnel on duty.
The Dramatic Confrontation at Gurdwara Mod
The scene unfolded at the busy Gurdwara Mod intersection, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Adarsh Nagar police station. Head Constable Rampal, a 52-year-old officer from the Jaipur traffic branch, was performing his regular traffic regulation duties when he spotted a truck entering a clearly marked no-entry route around 8:30 pm. Acting swiftly, Rampal signalled for the vehicle to stop immediately.
The truck initially slowed down, giving a false sense of compliance, but it did not come to a complete halt. Sensing that the driver intended to flee, the brave constable made a split-second decision. In an attempt to physically prevent the truck from moving forward, he climbed onto its bonnet. Instead of yielding, the driver, later identified as Raghuveer Singh from Lakshmangarh in Sikar, allegedly accelerated dangerously.
A Terrifying 500-Metre Ride
What followed was a harrowing ride for the officer. The driver, in a blatant attempt to dislodge Rampal, sped ahead, swerved the vehicle, and drove at high speed. For approximately 500 metres, Head Constable Rampal held on for his life, clinging to the bonnet as the truck careened through the streets. Shocked commuters and other motorists witnessed the unbelievable scene.
Realising the grave danger the policeman was in, these alert citizens sprang into action. They followed the rogue truck and, showing immense public spirit, used their own vehicles to strategically block its path, finally forcing it to stop. Only then could the exhausted constable safely get down, with locals rushing to his aid.
Aftermath and Recognition for Bravery
Police from the Adarsh Nagar station arrived promptly after being informed and took both the truck and its driver into custody. During his detention, Raghuveer Singh appeared to be intoxicated and was sent for a medical examination to confirm the same. An FIR was promptly registered based on the complaint filed by Head Constable Rampal.
In recognition of his exceptional courage and dedication to duty in the face of extreme peril, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Yogesh Dadhich has recommended Rampal's name for a formal reward. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks traffic police undertake daily and the severe consequences of drunk driving and traffic rule violations.
