Jaipur Traffic Disrupted by Bizarre Anti-Tobacco Protest
Traffic in the historic Badi Chaupar area of Jaipur came to a grinding halt on Monday afternoon following a highly unusual and disruptive protest. A man, later identified as Varun Johari, parked his vehicle directly in the middle of the busy road, climbed onto its roof, and began loudly shouting slogans demanding a complete ban on tobacco products.
Contradictory Actions Amidst Public Disturbance
In a striking contradiction, Johari was seen actively smoking a cigarette while simultaneously carrying two large boxes filled with cigarettes and bidis. His vocal demands for prohibiting tobacco were undercut by his own actions, creating a surreal scene that quickly attracted the attention of passers-by. A substantial crowd gathered at the intersection, further exacerbating the congestion.
Police Intervention and Arrest
With the vehicle obstructing the flow of traffic, a significant jam developed, slowing movement in the area. Police personnel present at the spot immediately responded, attempting to persuade the man to descend from the car roof. However, Johari continued his loud protest for a considerable duration before two officers managed to bring him down and take him into custody.
Official Statement from Law Enforcement
Manak Chowk Police Station SHO Rakesh Khayaliya provided details of the incident, which occurred around 3 PM. "We took the man, identified as Varun Johari, into custody for stopping his vehicle on the road, creating a disturbance, and obstructing traffic," Khayaliya stated. He highlighted the irony of the situation, noting, "While he was shouting against the harmful effects of cigarettes and bidis, he was himself smoking on the roof of the car."
Legal Proceedings and Vehicle Seizure
Following the arrest, police seized the vehicle used in the incident. Johari was later produced before a magistrate and subsequently released. However, the officer confirmed that the car remains impounded as part of the ongoing legal process. The incident serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of public disturbances and traffic obstruction, regardless of the protester's stated cause.
