Jaisalmer: Discom Employees Stage Protest Over Assault Case, Demand Immediate Arrest
In a significant development in Barmer district, employees of the electricity distribution company (Discom) staged a strong protest on Thursday. The demonstration was organized to demand the arrest of a man accused of assaulting an assistant engineer during an electricity theft prevention drive that took place a week earlier.
Work Boycott and Rally to District Collector's Office
Employees from the Sedwa area initiated a work boycott and proceeded in a rally towards the district collector's office. Upon arrival, they sat on dharna outside the main gate, raising slogans and voicing their demand for the immediate arrest of the accused individual. The protest highlighted growing concerns over safety issues faced by field staff during enforcement activities.
Solidarity from Other Departments
In a show of solidarity, engineers from the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) and the Public Works Department (PWD) also reached the protest site to express their support. Their presence underscored the broader implications of the incident for public sector employees involved in similar field operations.
Talks with District Administration
The additional district collector met with the protesting employees and invited a delegation for discussions with District Collector Tina Dabi. The delegation submitted a detailed memorandum outlining the incident and reiterating the demand for swift arrest and action against the accused.
District Collector Tina Dabi engaged with the delegation and spoke to the superintendent of police regarding the issue. She assured the protesting employees of prompt and strict action in the case, emphasizing the administration's commitment to addressing their grievances.
Background of the Incident
The incident in question occurred on January 22, when Assistant Engineer Ashok Vishnoi and his team visited Lagdhiro ki Dhani in Sedwa to investigate a complaint of power theft. As the team was departing with the seized meter, the accused, identified as Karmchand, allegedly grabbed Vishnoi by the collar, dragged him, slapped him, and snatched the confiscated meter and wires.
Ultimatum and Future Plans
Protesting employees issued a clear ultimatum, stating that if the accused is not arrested within two days, they will extend the work boycott and organize district-wide demonstrations. This stance reflects their determination to ensure justice and safety for all employees involved in such drives.
The protest has drawn attention to the challenges faced by Discom personnel in combating electricity theft and the need for enhanced security measures during enforcement operations.
