Jalandhar Couple Booked for Orchestrating Fake Robbery to Claim Insurance Money

Police in Jalandhar have taken legal action against a husband-wife duo after a thorough investigation exposed their elaborate scheme to stage a robbery. The couple, identified as Priya and Ramanand, residents of Jalandhar, had initially reported that Rs 19.1 lakh were snatched from them, but authorities later discovered the incident was a fabricated plot to fraudulently claim insurance money.

Initial Allegations of a Violent Snatching

On Friday, Priya and Ramanand filed a complaint alleging that two motorcyclists had snatched a bag containing the money from Priya outside an HDFC Bank branch in Urban Estate Phase 2 of Jalandhar. According to their account, Ramanand was parking their car when two youths approached on a motorcycle. Priya claimed the assailants pricked her hands with a sharp object before instantly snatching the bag and fleeing the scene.

The couple explained that they ran an artificial jewellery shop and had withdrawn Rs 17.1 lakh in cash from a bank near Football Chowk earlier that morning. They stated they added another Rs 2 lakh from home, as they needed to give the cash to someone for business purposes.

Police Investigation Uncovers the Truth

Jalandhar ADCP-2 Harinder Singh Gill led the investigation, which quickly took a dramatic turn. Police arrested two individuals, Bhima and Abhi, both hailing from Uttar Pradesh, in connection with the case. During questioning, the arrested men confessed to their involvement, revealing that they were hired by Priya and Ramanand to stage the robbery.

ADCP Gill stated, "The suspects spilled the beans, admitting they were paid Rs 7,000 by the couple to enact the drama of a loot. Their motive was to help Priya and Ramanand fraudulently claim insurance money." Further investigation revealed that the bag snatched during the staged incident was actually empty, and it was discarded on the way after the fake robbery.

Legal Consequences for the Couple

As a result of these findings, police have named Priya and Ramanand in the First Information Report (FIR) and booked them for their role in orchestrating the fake crime. ADCP Gill confirmed that the couple would also be arrested, marking a significant development in the case. This incident highlights the lengths to which individuals may go to commit insurance fraud, and it underscores the importance of thorough police work in uncovering such deceptive schemes.

The case serves as a cautionary tale about the serious legal repercussions of staging crimes for financial gain. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure all aspects of the fraud are addressed, and the couple now faces charges that could lead to severe penalties under Indian law.
