Massive 35-Kilometer Protest March in Jehanabad Demands Justice for Medical Aspirant

In a powerful display of public outrage, a 35-kilometer-long protest march was organized in Jehanabad district on Tuesday, demanding justice for the alleged rape and subsequent death of a medical entrance exam aspirant. The demonstrators, expressing deep anguish and frustration, called for the immediate arrest and stringent punishment of those responsible for the heinous crime.

Protesters Voice Anger with Slogans and Black Flags

The protesters took to the streets carrying black flags and posters with emotionally charged slogans that resonated with their demands for justice. Among the prominent slogans were “Behn-betiyon ke samman mein pura Bihar maidan me” (all of Bihar is on the ground in honour of sisters and daughters) and “Beti, hum sharminda hain, tere katil zinda hai” (daughter, we are ashamed, your killers are alive). The march was marked by anti-government slogans, with participants accusing the authorities of protecting influential criminals and attempting to suppress the case.

Political and Social Leaders Join the Demonstration

Purnia MP Pappu Yadav actively participated in the protest, emphasizing that the issue transcends the individual victim and concerns the safety of all daughters in Bihar. Speaking to reporters, Yadav stated, “We raised this issue in Parliament. It was also flagged in the assembly today. This is not just about the daughter of Jehanabad, but about the safety of daughters across Bihar.” His involvement highlighted the political dimensions of the case and the widespread concern it has generated.

Social activist Prahlad Bhardwaj raised serious allegations against the police and government. He claimed that despite several days passing since the incident, no perpetrators had been arrested. Bhardwaj further alleged that Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar summoned the victim’s parents and pressured them to accept the death as a suicide. He described this action as shameful and questioned the intentions of both the police and the government in handling the case.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The victim, a student preparing for the medical entrance exam, was staying at a girls’ hostel in Patna. She was found unconscious in her hostel room on January 6 and succumbed to her injuries during treatment on January 11 after remaining in a coma for several days. Forensic reports later revealed disturbing findings, including:

  • Traces of semen on her clothes
  • Indications of sexual violence
  • Genital injuries
  • Nail abrasions in the autopsy report

These findings have intensified demands for a thorough investigation and accountability.

Investigation and Government Response

The case was initially handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which took actions such as arresting the hostel owner and suspending two police officials for dereliction of duty. In response to mounting pressure and public outcry, the Bihar government later recommended a CBI inquiry into the matter. This move is seen as a step towards ensuring an impartial and comprehensive investigation, though protesters continue to demand swift justice and transparency.

The protest march in Jehanabad underscores the deep-seated anger and demand for systemic changes to protect women and ensure justice in such sensitive cases. It reflects a broader call for accountability and safety across the state.
