Justice MG Uma Stresses Character Over Skill for Young Advocates
Justice MG Uma on Character in Legal Profession

In a significant address that resonated with the legal community, Karnataka High Court Judge Justice MG Uma delivered a powerful message about professionalism and character in the legal field during the 25th anniversary celebration of Kannada legal monthly magazine 'Law Guide'.

The Essence of Professionalism in Law

Speaking at Vijnana Bhavana, University of Mysore on Saturday, Justice Uma provided crucial guidance to young advocates, emphasizing that character holds greater importance than mere legal skills in building a successful career. While acknowledging that strong legal abilities and effective argumentation are essential tools for any lawyer, she stressed that treating clients and judges with respect forms the foundation of genuine professional excellence.

The distinguished judge advised emerging legal professionals to avoid conceit and instead cultivate respectful personalities. "Advocates have become the voice for the voiceless," Justice Uma remarked, highlighting the noble responsibility that lawyers carry. She reminded the audience that advocates played a crucial role in nation-building even before independence, fighting for justice for those without representation.

Beyond Winning and Losing

Justice Uma presented a refreshing perspective on legal practice, stating that winning or losing cases shouldn't be the primary focus for young lawyers. What truly matters, according to her, is the sincerity and dedication with which an advocate handles each case. She encouraged newcomers not to feel discouraged by losses but to view them as learning opportunities that contribute to professional growth.

"We reached this point by learning from every mistake," Justice Uma shared, offering reassurance to those beginning their legal journeys. She emphasized that the lives and futures of clients are contained within the files handled by advocates, making it imperative for every legal professional and judge to recognize this profound responsibility.

Celebrating Legal Literature

The event also served as a platform to honor the remarkable achievement of Law Guide magazine, which has been serving the legal community in Kannada for a quarter century. Justice Uma congratulated magazine editor and advocate HN Venkatesh for successfully maintaining the publication's relevance and quality over 25 years.

The ceremony saw the release of the Law Guide calendar and diary, symbolizing the publication's continued commitment to supporting legal professionals. The gathering included several distinguished personalities from various fields, including retired IPS officer DN Munikrishna, MLA A Manju, and ADC Mysuru P Shivaraj, along with advocates HN Venkatesh and MD Harish Kumar Hegde.

In a special recognition segment, retired district judges CG Hunagund, Shashikala, Basavaraj S Sappannanavar, Raja Somashekar, SH Hosagoudar, Angadi Hiremath received felicitations. The academic community was represented by JSS Law College executive officer Prof KS Suresh, while Mahesh from Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited also joined the honored guests.

Justice Uma's address served as both inspiration and practical guidance for the next generation of legal professionals, reinforcing the timeless values that form the bedrock of the justice system.
