Kalyan RTO Initiates Strict Crackdown on Taxis After Fatal Highway Accident
In the wake of a devastating road accident on National Highway 61 that resulted in 11 fatalities on the Rayta bridge, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Kalyan has launched a decisive enforcement campaign against 'kaali-peeli' taxis operating along the critical Kalyan–Murbad route. This action comes just one day after the tragic incident, highlighting urgent safety concerns.
Immediate Enforcement and Commuter Impact
RTO officials have already taken action against six taxis found violating passenger limits, with approximately 108 vehicles operating on this stretch. Anticipating the crackdown, a significant majority of taxi operators chose to keep their vehicles off the roads on Wednesday, leading to considerable inconvenience for daily commuters. Many passengers were observed shifting to Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses, prompting the state transport body to introduce an additional bus service to accommodate the sudden surge in demand.
Deputy RTO Ashutosh Barkul emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, "We have taken action against six taxis found carrying more than the permitted five passengers plus driver. Strict orders have been given that any violation will invite immediate and severe consequences." He reiterated that overloading is a primary focus of the enforcement drive.
Preliminary Findings on the Accident Cause
Initial investigations by the RTO point to driver negligence as the likely cause of the fatal accident. According to Barkul, "The driver was speeding and attempted to overtake, following which the vehicle collided head-on with a ready-mix concrete truck coming from the opposite direction." A detailed report outlining these findings has been formally submitted to the transport department for further review and action.
The RTO has also issued a public appeal, urging commuters to avoid boarding overloaded taxis. Officials stress that passenger awareness and cooperation are essential components in preventing such catastrophic incidents in the future.
Route Challenges and Infrastructure Issues
The Kalyan–Murbad route serves as a vital arterial link for commuters traveling to Murbad taluka in Thane district, with limited transportation alternatives beyond MSRTC buses and private vehicles. Ongoing road-widening projects have created uneven stretches along the highway, where incomplete patches force vehicles to slow down, while finished sections often encourage dangerous speeding.
Officials suspect that this inconsistent road condition may have played a role in the Rayta bridge accident. Currently, traffic on the bridge is restricted to only two lanes of a four-lane structure, creating a sudden transition from poor road surfaces to a smoother flyover. This abrupt change can lead to overspeeding and loss of vehicle control, posing significant risks to safety.
The enforcement actions and ongoing investigations underscore the critical need for improved road safety measures, stricter compliance with regulations, and enhanced infrastructure maintenance to safeguard commuters on this essential route.
