Kanpur: A 38-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly murdering his friend over the theft of a bundle of beedi and ₹150, police said. The incident occurred on June 3.
Body Found Near Indira Gandhi Statue
Late on the night of June 3, a blood-stained body of a labourer was discovered in Labour Mandi near the Indira Gandhi statue on Meston Road. The deceased was later identified as Vishal alias Ravi, 35, a labourer who worked in Coolie Bazar and on Meston Road, living on the footpath.
Arrest and Confession
According to DCP (East) Satyajit Gupta, CCTV footage led to the identification of the accused, who was subsequently arrested. During interrogation, the accused, identified as Asharfilal alias Raju, 38, confessed to the murder.
Asharfilal told police that the deceased used to steal money and beedi from his pocket. On the night of the incident, Vishal allegedly stole a bundle of beedi and ₹150. When the accused objected, the deceased abused him. In a fit of anger, Asharfilal killed him by crushing his head with a brick while he was asleep, and then fled the scene.
Legal Proceedings
Police stated that the accused was produced in court on Friday afternoon and subsequently sent to jail. The investigation is ongoing.
