Kanpur: In a late-night operation on Monday, Kotwali police arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged assault on a man from the Sikh community at a bar in Civil Lines. During the altercation, the victim's turban was forcibly removed. Police officials confirmed that a search for the remaining accused is ongoing.
Incident Details
The incident involves Vansh Bhatia, the younger brother of Sahaj Bhatia, a car dealer residing in Azad Nagar. Vansh had visited a bar in Civil Lines with his family on Friday evening. At approximately 2:12 am, while descending alone in the lift, a verbal dispute erupted between Vansh and Dhairya Gupta, a resident of Pandu Nagar, over name-calling. According to police reports, Dhairya then descended with three companions and a female, and the group began assaulting Vansh with kicks and punches within the bar premises.
Nature of the Assault
During the assault, the accused removed Vansh's turban, pulled his hair, and slammed his head against the wall. Vansh sustained serious injuries to his nose and face, and his throat was also choked. The severity of the attack highlights the targeted nature of the violence, which also involved religious disrespect.
Legal Action
On Saturday, the victim's mother, Sonia Bhatia, filed a formal complaint against all four accused at Kotwali police station. The complaint led to the arrest of Dhairya and his associate Sachin Gupta late Monday night. Kotwali in-charge Jagdish Pandey stated, “Dhairya and his associate Sachin Gupta, who assaulted the Sikh youth, were arrested late at night. Search for the others is underway.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police are actively searching for the remaining two suspects involved in the incident. The investigation is focused on gathering evidence from the bar's CCTV footage and witness statements to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice. The case has drawn attention to the need for stricter measures against hate crimes and religious intolerance.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of communal harmony and the legal consequences of actions that violate an individual's dignity and religious sentiments. The authorities have assured that the accused will face the full force of the law.
