Kanpur Police Officer Suspended Following Allegations of Custodial Violence Against Domestic Violence Accused
A senior police officer in Kanpur has been suspended after a 28-year-old man accused of domestic violence was allegedly subjected to severe physical assault while in police custody. The incident, which occurred late Tuesday, resulted in significant injuries including a ruptured eardrum and multiple bodily injuries.
Suspension and Investigation Ordered by Police Authorities
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Atul Shrivastav confirmed the suspension of Shastri Nagar police outpost in-charge Pawan Mishra. "Outpost in-charge Pawan Mishra has been suspended over the alleged custodial beating," stated DCP Shrivastav. "A comprehensive departmental inquiry is currently underway, and any further disciplinary action will be determined based on the findings of this investigation."
The suspension came after an Assistant Commissioner of Police's investigation found Mishra guilty following a formal complaint filed by the victim's mother. The police department has taken swift action in response to the serious allegations of misconduct.
Details of the Custodial Incident and Alleged Assault
The victim, identified as Abhishek Singh, a private company employee, was summoned to the police outpost after his wife Shivangi filed a domestic violence case against him. According to Singh's mother Madhubala, family disputes had been ongoing over minor issues, and the complaint was filed specifically after Singh spent a night at his mother's residence with his 1.5-year-old daughter.
When Singh visited the police chowki on Tuesday evening, he was allegedly assaulted by Mishra and several other police personnel. The officers reportedly involved in the incident include sub-inspectors Arun Trivedi, Raju Kharwar, Jaswant Singh, and Sumit Singh Chauhan. During the alleged beating, the police personnel threatened to imprison Singh if any further complaints were filed against him in the future.
Mother Discovers Son Injured and Medical Examination Results
Madhubala became concerned when her son failed to return home late into the night. She proceeded to the police outpost where she discovered Singh in severe pain with visible injury marks covering his body. "When I reached the chowki, I found my son writhing in pain," Madhubala recounted. "The injury marks were clearly visible on his body, indicating he had been subjected to physical violence."
A subsequent medical examination conducted by a private doctor revealed that Singh had suffered a ruptured eardrum along with other bodily injuries consistent with physical assault. The medical findings have added substantial weight to the allegations against the police personnel involved in the incident.
Broader Implications for Police Conduct and Accountability
This incident has raised serious questions about police conduct and custodial procedures in Kanpur. The swift suspension of the outpost in-charge demonstrates the police department's recognition of the gravity of the allegations. However, the case also highlights ongoing concerns about police accountability and the treatment of individuals in custody, particularly those accused of domestic disputes.
The departmental inquiry now underway will determine whether additional disciplinary measures are warranted against other officers allegedly involved in the incident. Legal experts suggest that such cases underscore the need for stronger safeguards against custodial violence and more transparent investigation procedures when allegations of police misconduct arise.
