Kanpur Restaurant Owner Hospitalized After Being Dragged by SUV in Extortion Attack
A shocking incident of extortion and violence unfolded in Kanpur when a restaurant owner was brutally assaulted and dragged by an SUV for approximately 80 meters after refusing to pay a demanded share of his Holi festival earnings. The victim, identified as Adarsh Kumar, was hospitalized with injuries following the attack that occurred late Tuesday night in the Gujaini police station area.
Details of the Violent Assault
According to the police complaint filed by the victim's father, Ranjit Singh, the incident took place around 12:15 AM on Tuesday. Adarsh Kumar had just closed the family's sweet shop and restaurant located at Ramgopal Chauraha when the accused, identified as Yashu Kumar from Hamirpur, arrived in his SUV (UP 78 HZ 0571).
Yashu Kumar allegedly demanded that Adarsh hand over revenue earned during the Holi festival celebrations. When Adarsh protested against this extortion attempt, Yashu assaulted him physically and attempted to snatch money directly from his pockets. The commotion alerted restaurant employees who rushed outside to intervene.
The Terrifying SUV Dragging Incident
In a particularly brutal escalation, Yashu Kumar then grabbed Adarsh by the collar while still inside his vehicle and began driving the SUV, dragging the restaurant owner alongside the moving vehicle for about 80 meters. CCTV footage from the area captured the horrifying moment when Adarsh was pulled along the road by the speeding vehicle.
"When those present chased the car, Yashu dropped Adarsh on the road and fled the scene," explained Ranjit Singh in his statement to authorities. The violent dragging resulted in significant injuries to Adarsh Kumar, and his gold chain broke during the assault and was lost at the scene.
Police Response and Investigation
Gujaini police station in-charge Rajan Sharma confirmed that authorities have taken swift action following the incident. "After receiving the complaint, the victim was immediately sent for medical examination to document his injuries," stated Sharma. The police have registered a formal case based on the complaint and have launched a search operation to locate and apprehend the accused, Yashu Kumar.
The investigation is ongoing, with police examining the CCTV footage and gathering additional evidence from the crime scene. The incident has raised concerns about extortion attempts targeting small business owners during festival seasons when establishments typically experience increased revenue.
Broader Context and Community Impact
This violent attack highlights the vulnerability of small business owners to extortion demands, particularly during festive periods when commercial activity peaks. The Holi festival, celebrated widely across North India, represents a significant revenue opportunity for restaurants and sweet shops, making them potential targets for criminal elements seeking to exploit their success.
Local business owners have expressed concern about the incident, calling for increased police vigilance during festival seasons. The case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by entrepreneurs operating in urban areas and the importance of robust law enforcement response to protect commercial establishments from such predatory behavior.
