Kanpur Road Rage: Man and Son Stabbed to Death; Three Arrested After Encounter
In a tragic road rage incident on Sunday night in Kanpur, a 60-year-old man and his 25-year-old son were stabbed to death, while his elder son sustained critical injuries. Police said the clash erupted after a minor collision between a motorcycle carrying the man and his two sons and another bike on the Yashoda Nagar Bypass. The deceased were identified as Shiv Narayan Trivedi and his son Shivam, while the injured is Satyam, 30.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers initially assaulted the victims with helmets before using bricks and knives, leaving them critically injured on the road. Police rushed the injured to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead. The man and his sons worked at a marble shop and were returning home after work when the incident occurred.
An angry crowd managed to overpower one of the assailants, identified as 19-year-old Shiva Verma, thrashed him, and later handed him over to the police. The other two assailants, Karan Verma, 24, and Utkarsh Awasthi, 19, initially fled. The autopsy report noted multiple knife marks on the bodies of the deceased and the injured.
At around 4 am Monday, police arrested two suspects and their accomplice following an encounter. According to police, a tip-off was received that the accused were fleeing towards Hamirpur. Police teams surrounded them and attempted to intercept their vehicle. When asked to surrender, the suspects allegedly opened fire. In retaliatory action, Karan sustained bullet injuries in both legs, while his associates, Ujjwal and Sameer Gautam, were arrested after a brief chase.
DCP (South) Dipendra Nath Chaudhary said Karan has nearly five criminal cases registered against him at Naubasta police station, including charges of assault and murder. In 2023, he allegedly attacked a youth who later died during treatment, following which he was jailed. He was released on bail about a year later. Police also said Karan was known to frequently carry a knife.
Police commissioner Raghubir Lal stated, "We will ensure the accused face the harshest punishment by invoking stringent charges so that such crimes are not repeated in the future." Police said none of the arrested accused had permanent employment, except Shiva, who worked as a delivery executive with an e-commerce platform.
