Kanpur Septic Tank Tragedy: Father and Son Die from Toxic Gas Exposure
In a tragic incident in Kanpur, a man and his son lost their lives after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank. The incident occurred at Anand apartment in Gooba Garden, located in the Kalyanpur area of the city, during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Rescue Operation and Response
Upon receiving information, authorities swiftly responded to the scene. ACP Kalyanpur Ashutosh and DCP West SM Qasim Abidi, along with a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team, arrived at the location. They conducted a rescue operation that lasted approximately one hour, successfully pulling out three individuals from the septic tank.
All three victims were immediately transported to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital for medical attention. Tragically, doctors at the hospital declared the man and his son dead upon arrival. The third worker survived and is currently receiving treatment.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the victims have been identified as Javed, aged 45, and his son Abid, aged 25, both residents of the Colonelganj police station area. The survivor, Irfan, who is Javed's son-in-law, provided a detailed account of the events.
Irfan stated that he, along with Javed and Abid, went to clean the septic tank. They began their work around Tuesday midnight, setting up the necessary equipment before entering the tank for cleaning. After completing an initial round of cleaning, all three came out briefly.
At approximately 2 o'clock in the morning, they re-entered the septic tank for a second round of cleaning. During this phase, Javed and Abid ventured deeper into the tank and became trapped. Irfan reported that after a prolonged period without any response from them, he raised an alarm, as he also began experiencing dizziness and disorientation.
Police Investigation and Statements
The family of the victims contacted the police through Dial 112, prompting the emergency response. ACP Kalyanpur Ashutosh confirmed that the three men had been working since midnight. He noted that at around 3:30 in the morning, they fainted while inside the septic tank, leading to the fatalities of the father and son.
Authorities have sent the bodies for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. A thorough investigation is currently underway to ascertain whether safety standards and protocols were violated during the cleaning process. This includes examining if proper precautions were taken to prevent toxic gas exposure, which is a common hazard in such environments.
