Kanpur Traffic Police Issues Over 10,000 Challans in Major Road Safety Drive

In a significant enforcement push under the ongoing road safety campaign, the Kanpur traffic police issued a staggering 10,108 challans during the month of January. This crackdown followed a review meeting of the district's road safety committee, chaired by District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh, where officials detailed the breakdown of violations.

Breakdown of Traffic Violations

The bulk of the penalties were for overspeeding, which accounted for 6,297 challans. Other major infractions included:

  • 1,307 challans for illegal parking.
  • 996 challans for not wearing helmets.
  • 938 challans for driving in the opposite direction.

This January drive represents a sharp increase in enforcement activity. For comparison, 2,267 challans were issued in November 2025 and 3,202 challans in December 2025, indicating a ramped-up effort at the start of the new year.

Accident Figures Show Promising Decline

Alongside the rigorous enforcement, preliminary data indicates a positive trend in road safety. The number of reported accidents in Kanpur has seen a notable decrease.

Comparing December figures year-over-year, accidents fell from 57 in December 2024 to 37 in December 2025. The trend continued into January, with accidents reducing from 37 in January 2025 to 24 in January 2026.

More importantly, the severity of accidents has diminished. Fatalities dropped from 26 to 17, and the number of injured persons decreased significantly from 23 to just 9 in the comparative January periods.

Deployment of Special Enforcement Teams

To achieve these results, authorities formed 20 special traffic enforcement teams deployed across critical corridors in 18 police station areas of the district. These areas include Maharajpur, Chakeri, Naubasta, Govindnagar, Gujaini, Barra, Hanuman Vihar, Panki, Sachendi, Bithoor, Shivrajpur, Chaubeypur, Bilhaur, Araul, Bidhanu, Saadh, Ghatampur, and Sajeti.

Notably, two teams each were specifically deployed from the Chaubeypur and Ghatampur areas. Each team was led by a sub-inspector and supported by four constables, ensuring a robust presence on the ground.

Advanced Equipment for Enforcement and Assistance

These teams were equipped with state-of-the-art gear to enhance both enforcement capabilities and emergency response. The equipment issued included:

  • Speed laser guns for accurate overspeeding detection.
  • Body-worn cameras for transparency and evidence collection.
  • Decibel meters to monitor noise pollution.
  • Breath analysers for drunk-driving checks.
  • Reflective jackets, search lights, and loud hailers for team safety and communication.
  • First aid kits and stretchers to provide immediate assistance at accident sites.

Administrative Directives for Infrastructure and Awareness

During the review meeting, District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh addressed several infrastructural and administrative issues impacting road safety. He directed officials to compile a comprehensive list of all dug-up roads from the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation, and National Highways authorities.

Expressing strong displeasure, the DM specifically highlighted unauthorized road cutting by Jal Nigam/Jalkal on the stretch from Rawatpur crossing to Double Culvert. He instructed officials to send a formal proposal to the state government recommending action against the responsible agencies or individuals.

The DM also emphasized the importance of departmental accountability, noting the absence of the municipal corporation's chief engineer and the chief medical officer from the meeting. He stated that the presence of responsible officers would be mandatory in all important review meetings going forward.

Furthermore, to bolster post-accident care, the DM directed officials to widely publicize key government schemes. These include the PM Relief scheme for treatment in the golden hour, the Rahveer scheme, and facilities for cashless treatment for accident victims, ensuring that citizens are fully aware of the support available to them.
