Kanpur Police Detain Eight YouTubers Over Alleged Kidnapping Prank Targeting 10-Year-Old Boy
In a shocking incident, police in Kanpur detained eight YouTubers on Saturday for allegedly kidnapping a 10-year-old boy and demanding a ransom, only to claim it was a prank after the child was released approximately two hours later. The case has raised serious concerns about the influence of social media and the boundaries of online content creation.
Details of the Disturbing Incident
According to DCP (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary, the event unfolded on the evening of February 11. The 10-year-old boy, whose father holds a private job, had gone to a nearby market to purchase vegetables. While there, two boys approached him and took him near a private school. At this location, they threatened the child and instructed him to call his mother, demanding Rs 2,00,000 in ransom.
The frightened boy complied, making the call to his mother while crying and conveying the demand before the assailants disconnected the line. This distressing communication plunged the family into panic, prompting an immediate search for the missing child.
The Prank Revelation and Aftermath
About 25 minutes after the initial call, another demand arrived, this time for Rs 5,000 to be delivered near UP Kirana School. However, around 9 pm, the boys called again, declaring the entire episode was merely a prank. Following this announcement, the boy returned home safely and recounted the full story to his mother.
Despite efforts by the family to trace the perpetrators, they remained elusive. Consequently, on February 12, the boy's mother filed an official complaint at the Gujaini police station, leading to the registration of a case and the launch of a formal investigation.
Police Investigation and Breakthrough
The investigation gained momentum with the aid of CCTV footage from the area. DCP Chaudhary revealed that police reviewed approximately 150 CCTV cameras and analyzed call detail records (CDR) from the phone numbers used to make the ransom demands. This scrutiny uncovered that two local boys had placed the calls using numbers registered in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Two specialized police teams were deployed to apprehend the culprits, resulting in the detention of eight individuals. The adults taken into custody include Arvind Singh from E Block Kacchi Basti, Chandan Kumar from Jarauli, Lucky from Varun Vihar, and Shahid and Aman Katiyar from Barra 8, along with three minors.
Background and Social Media Influence
During interrogation, the group admitted to learning their tactics from social media videos, highlighting a troubling trend of online content inspiring real-world misconduct. Police further discovered between 150 and 200 objectionable videos on their mobile phones, underscoring the extent of their involvement in dubious activities.
Notably, Aman Katiyar was found to have two prior theft cases against him, adding to the gravity of the situation. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by irresponsible social media usage and the need for greater accountability among content creators.
