Kapurthala Police Dismantle Pakistan-Backed Narcotics Module in Major Bust
In a significant crackdown on international drug trafficking, the Kapurthala police have successfully apprehended four drug smugglers, including one woman, and seized a substantial 16.8 kilograms of heroin from their possession. The operation has exposed a sophisticated narcotics network with alleged backing from Pakistan, marking a critical victory in Punjab's ongoing war against drugs.
High-Stakes Operation and Dramatic Chase
Acting on a credible tip-off, the Kapurthala police, under the leadership of SSP Gaurav Toora, laid a strategic trap to intercept the suspects. When police attempted to stop the suspects' car, the accused escalated the situation by trying to run over the police party in a desperate bid to escape. This led to a tense high-speed chase through the region.
"To neutralize the threat and prevent their escape, the police were compelled to fire rounds at the vehicle's tyres, successfully bringing it to a halt," detailed SSP Gaurav Toora. A thorough search of the impounded car subsequently revealed the massive heroin consignment, weighing 16.8 kg.
International Links and Accused Identities
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed the international dimensions of the case. "Preliminary investigations indicate this drug trafficking was orchestrated at the behest of handlers based in Pakistan and Dubai," stated DGP Yadav. He further revealed that the seized narcotics were smuggled from the Amritsar border area and were destined for delivery in Chandigarh, highlighting the network's operational reach.
The individuals arrested in connection with this major haul have been identified as:
- Balwinder Singh, a resident of Pandori Mohalla in Sultanpur Lodhi.
- Sumanpreet Kaur, from Gohalwar in Amritsar.
- Harpal Singh and Jaskaranbir Singh, both residents of Dauke village in Amritsar.
In addition to the heroin, police teams have also confiscated the car used by the accused during the operation.
Ongoing Investigation to Unearth Full Network
DGP Gaurav Yadav emphasized that the investigation is far from over. Authorities are now intensively working to establish both forward and backward linkages in this case. The primary objective is to completely unearth the entire smuggling network, identify all key players, and disrupt the supply chain from its international sources to local distributors. This bust is expected to provide crucial intelligence for future operations against cross-border narcotics trade.
This decisive action by the Kapurthala police underscores the continued vigilance and proactive measures being taken by Punjab's law enforcement agencies to combat the scourge of drug trafficking, which often has complex international connections threatening regional security and public health.
