The explosion occurred when a gas cylinder supplied by Kusuma Gas Agency, under the Bharat Gas brand, leaked and ignited. Channabasappa suffered property damage and personal distress as a result. He approached the consumer forum seeking redressal for the losses incurred.

The Karnataka Consumer Forum, after hearing the case, held the gas agency liable for the incident. The forum cited negligence in ensuring the safety of the gas cylinder and directed Kusuma Gas Agency to pay Rs 29 lakh as compensation. The amount covers property damage, medical expenses, and mental agony suffered by the consumer.
