Karnataka Minister for Revenue C Narayana Gowda has urged the state government to regulate the mushrooming of homestays following the sexual assault of a US woman in Kodagu district. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of tourists and the unchecked growth of unregistered homestays in the region.
Immediate Police Action
Kodagu Superintendent of Police R N Bindu Mani stated that action was taken immediately after receiving information from the US Embassy. The accused were arrested swiftly, and a thorough investigation is underway. The police have assured that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure justice for the victim.
Call for Regulation
Minister Gowda emphasized that the government must implement strict guidelines for homestays to prevent such incidents in the future. He pointed out that many homestays operate without proper registration or background checks, posing a risk to guests. He suggested that a mandatory registration process and regular inspections should be introduced.
The incident has sparked a debate on the safety of women tourists in Karnataka. Local tourism bodies have also called for better enforcement of existing laws and the creation of a tourism police force to patrol popular destinations.
The US Embassy has been in contact with the victim and is providing consular assistance. The accused are currently in police custody and are being questioned.
