Karnataka Residents Stranded in West Asia as Israel-Iran Tensions Escalate

In a concerning development amid rising geopolitical tensions, the office of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed on Monday that 109 individuals from the state are currently stranded in parts of West Asia. This situation has arisen due to escalating conflicts between Israel and Iran, which have led to significant airspace disruptions and widespread flight cancellations across the region.

Breakdown of Stranded Individuals by Location and District

According to an official statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), the stranded Kannadigas are distributed as follows:

  • 100 people in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE): The highest number, 32, are from Ballari district, followed by Bengaluru (25), Davanagere (9), and smaller numbers from Chikkamagaluru (5), Madikeri (4), Vijayapura (4), Shivamogga (3), Raichur (3), Mangaluru (3), Udupi (2), Chitradurga (2), Kalaburagi (2), Chikkaballapur (2), and Tumakuru (1). District details for three individuals remain unconfirmed.
  • 9 people in Bahrain: This group includes four from Hassan district, three from Udupi, one from Madikeri, and one from an unidentified district.

The disruptions stem from recent advisories issued by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation regarding airspace restrictions and Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) declared by several West Asian nations, creating uncertainty for residents, workers, students, and travelers.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's Appeal to Prime Minister Modi

In response to this crisis, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging immediate action. He expressed grave concern over the rapidly evolving security situation and called for the initiation of evacuation preparedness, enhanced diplomatic outreach, and the establishment of an inter-ministerial mechanism to protect Kannadigas and other Indian nationals affected.

Siddaramaiah also revealed that he has personally interacted via video call with some of the stranded individuals in Dubai. "I've spoken with Kannadigas stranded in Dubai and reassured them," he stated. Following discussions with state officials, he has instructed the Chief Secretary to coordinate closely with officials from the Ministry of External Affairs to facilitate their safe return.

State and Central Government Coordination Efforts

Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda provided updates on the coordination efforts, noting that the state government has actively taken up the matter with the central authorities. "We've taken up this matter with the central government and sought their intervention," he explained. The Centre has informed that, due to suspended air traffic, no flights can currently operate. However, assurances have been given that arrangements for return travel—either through special flights or regular airline services—will be made as soon as air traffic is cleared.

Gowda added that all 109 stranded individuals have contacted the designated helpline and shared their details, ensuring proper tracking and support.

Meanwhile, in Mysuru, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy emphasized that the central government has taken all necessary measures to ensure the safe return of those stranded. He highlighted the Modi government's track record in safely evacuating Indians during previous similar crises and urged citizens not to panic, promising a swift resolution.

This incident underscores the broader impact of international conflicts on Indian nationals abroad, with Karnataka authorities and the central government working in tandem to address the challenges posed by the Israel-Iran tensions in West Asia.
