The UDF government in Kerala on Thursday recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of Kannur Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Naveen Babu in 2024. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister V D Satheesan.
Cabinet Decision and Family's Appeal
Addressing the media after the meeting, Chief Minister Satheesan stated that the Cabinet had recommended a CBI investigation to the Central Government, considering the representation submitted by the late Naveen Babu's wife. The family had sought the Chief Minister's intervention due to dissatisfaction with the police investigation into the case, which had triggered a political controversy in Kerala in 2024.
Compassionate Appointment for Daughter
In addition to the CBI probe, the Cabinet directed the Revenue Department to take steps to provide a job on compassionate grounds to Babu's daughter. This move aims to support the family in the wake of the tragic incident.
Background of the Case
Babu was found dead at his official residence in Kannur on October 14, 2024, a day after former Kannur District Panchayat president P P Divya allegedly made corruption allegations against him at a public farewell function held at the Kannur District Collectorate. Divya is the sole accused in the case.
Political Fallout
Facing criticism from the then Opposition parties, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] leadership in Kannur removed Divya from her post. She was later demoted from the party's district committee to its branch committee and stripped of all elected positions within the party. The case had sparked widespread political debate and demands for a fair investigation.
The Kerala government's recommendation for a CBI probe marks a significant step in addressing the demands for justice from Babu's family and the public. The Central Government will now decide on the request for a CBI investigation.
