A civil police officer formerly attached to the Karipur police station in Kozhikode has been suspended over alleged links with accused persons in an MDMA seizure case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Background of the Case
The suspension came after a preliminary inquiry by the Kondotty Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), initiated following a report submitted by the district special branch DSP to the Malappuram district police chief. The inquiry revealed that the officer had maintained close ties with five individuals who were arrested by Karipur police after approximately 40 grams of MDMA was seized in January 2026.
Legal Provisions Involved
The case was registered under Sections 22(c) and 29(1) of the NDPS Act. Section 22(c) pertains to punishment for contravention in relation to psychotropic substances, while Section 29(1) deals with abetment and criminal conspiracy.
The suspension order also noted that the officer failed to exercise the level of caution expected of him in his interactions with the public while serving as the Police Relations Officer (PRO) of the station. This lapse in judgment further contributed to the decision to suspend him pending a detailed investigation.
Further Investigation Ordered
The Vengara inspector of police has been directed to conduct an oral inquiry into the matter and submit a comprehensive report within two months. The inquiry will delve deeper into the officer's alleged connections with the accused and assess any potential lapses in duty.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by Kerala Police to maintain integrity and accountability within its ranks, especially in cases involving serious narcotics offenses.
