Kerala Fast Track Court Imposes Seven-Year Sentence for Sexual Assault of Minor
A special fast track court in Thiruvananthapuram delivered a significant verdict on Thursday, sentencing a 65-year-old resident of Muttathara to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy. The court, presided over by judge Anju Meera Birla, emphasized the gravity of the crime in its ruling.
Details of the Assault Incident
According to prosecution accounts, the incident occurred on April 8, 2025. The victim was walking alone when the accused, who was seated by the roadside, called out to him. The boy recognized the man from previous visits to his home for work-related purposes. When the minor approached, the accused forcibly pulled him closer and committed the sexual assault. Following the attack, the perpetrator threatened the boy, warning him against disclosing the incident to anyone.
Immediate Response and Legal Action
Despite the threats, the boy promptly informed his father's friends who were nearby and contacted his father directly. The authorities were alerted without delay, leading to the registration of a formal case. The investigation was conducted by Vanchiyoor sub-inspector Alex C, with the prosecution handled by special public prosecutors R S Vijay Mohan and H A Ravi.
Prior Criminal Record of the Accused
The court noted during proceedings that the accused had a previous conviction for raping a woman with learning disabilities. That incident took place in May 2012 in the bathroom of a wedding hall where he was employed as a watchman. This prior offense was considered in the current sentencing, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior.
Legal Implications and Community Impact
This case underscores the effectiveness of fast track courts in delivering timely justice for sexual offenses, particularly those involving minors. The seven-year rigorous imprisonment sentence reflects the judiciary's commitment to holding perpetrators accountable and protecting vulnerable populations. The swift action by the victim's family and law enforcement demonstrates the importance of community vigilance in addressing such crimes.
