Kerala Police Nab Duo in Elaborate Instagram Honey-Trap and Robbery Scheme
In a disturbing case of digital deception and violent crime, the Sreekaryam police in Thiruvananthapuram have made significant arrests. A 19-year-old woman and her male accomplice were taken into custody on Tuesday in connection with a meticulously planned honey-trap operation. The scheme involved luring a young victim through the popular social media platform Instagram, leading to a brutal assault and the theft of substantial cash and valuable items.
Details of the Accused and Their Modus Operandi
The primary accused has been identified as Surya, a resident of Chellamangalam in the Sreekaryam area. Her alleged partner in crime is Kailas, aged 20, hailing from Pappanamcode. According to police officials, the duo specifically targeted a 19-year-old male from Keezhthonnakkal. Their criminal strategy began with Surya initiating contact and building a rapport with the victim on Instagram. After establishing a connection, she extended an invitation for a meeting at Pangappara on April 18.
The Violent Confrontation and Subsequent Robbery
Upon the victim's arrival at the designated location, he was ambushed by a group of men believed to be associates of the accused. The assailants forcibly placed him on a scooter and transported him to a remote pond area near Sangeetha Nagar, adjacent to the Pangappara Health Centre. At this isolated spot, the victim was subjected to a severe physical assault. He was beaten and struck on the head with a beer bottle, resulting in visible injuries.
The perpetrators did not stop at physical violence. They proceeded to steal his mobile phone and then coerced him into transferring Rs 10,000 from his bank account using a mobile banking application. Additionally, under duress, the victim was forced to send another Rs 2,500 to a different phone number. Following the extortion and assault, the accused abandoned the injured victim at the scene and fled.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Acting on a formal complaint filed by the victim, the Sreekaryam police launched a comprehensive investigation. Through diligent efforts, law enforcement officials successfully tracked down and apprehended both Surya and Kailas. The arrested individuals were subsequently presented before a judicial magistrate. The court has ordered them to be remanded to judicial custody for a period of 14 days as the investigation continues.
Police authorities have confirmed that the probe is ongoing, with active efforts to identify and capture other accomplices involved in this criminal network. This case highlights the growing risks associated with social media interactions and the importance of vigilance in digital communications. The swift action by the Sreekaryam police serves as a reminder of the legal consequences awaiting those who exploit online platforms for malicious purposes.
