Kerala Police's First Narcotic Sniffer Dog 'Neeli' Retires After 11 Years of Distinguished Service
In a heartfelt ceremony, Kerala Police's inaugural narcotic detection canine, 'Neeli' (also known as Brooze), officially retired from active duty on Wednesday after serving the force for 11 years. The retirement function was conducted at the K-9 squad complex located in Kuyilimala, Idukki, and was formally inaugurated by District Police Chief K M Sabu Mathew, marking the end of an era for the state's canine unit.
A Career of Dedication and Achievement
Neeli joined the Kerala Police force on June 30, 2015, embarking on a journey that would see her become a cornerstone of anti-narcotics operations. After receiving specialized training at the prestigious Kerala Police Academy in Thrissur, this female Labrador was inducted into the Idukki district dog squad, where she quickly proved her mettle.
Over her extensive career, Neeli emerged as a vital asset in the fight against drug trafficking, assisting police officers in cracking approximately 50 major drug cases. Her keen sense of smell and unwavering dedication made her an indispensable tool in numerous investigations, helping to curb illicit activities across the region.
Accolades and Recognition
Neeli's excellence was not limited to field operations. Between 2017 and 2019, she earned accolades at state-level competitions, showcasing her superior detection skills. Her performance was so impressive that she represented Kerala at the national police meet, bringing honor to the state's canine corps and highlighting the effectiveness of trained sniffer dogs in law enforcement.
Post-Retirement Life and Adoption
Following her retirement, Neeli will enjoy a well-deserved rest in the care of Civil Police Officer P N Ranjith Mohan, who volunteered to adopt the canine. Mohan, along with Jerry George, served as Neeli's handlers throughout her service, forming a strong bond that ensured her success in the field. This adoption ensures that Neeli transitions smoothly into her retirement, surrounded by familiar faces and comfort.
