KG Basin Gas Migration Dispute: RIL, Two Firms Agree to Mediation
KG Basin Gas Dispute: RIL, Firms Opt for Mediation

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and two other companies have informed the Supreme Court that they will write to the central government to initiate mediation in the long-standing Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin gas migration dispute. The development came during a hearing on Friday before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India.

Background of the Dispute

The dispute revolves around the alleged migration of gas from one block to another in the KG basin. The government had earlier accused RIL of extracting gas that belonged to a neighboring block operated by a public sector undertaking. The matter has been pending in court for several years.

Supreme Court Proceedings

During the hearing, senior advocates representing RIL and the other firms submitted that they would approach the Centre to explore mediation as a means to resolve the issue. The bench took note of the submission and posted the matter for further hearing after the mediation process is initiated. The court also directed that the status quo regarding the gas production be maintained until the next hearing.

Significance of Mediation

Mediation is seen as a positive step towards resolving the complex technical and legal issues involved in the case. The KG basin is one of India's most significant oil and gas reserves, and the dispute has implications for energy security and investment climate. The government has been pushing for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to reduce litigation.

The firms' decision to seek mediation comes after multiple rounds of litigation and failed attempts at out-of-court settlements. The Supreme Court had earlier suggested that the parties explore mediation to save time and resources. The outcome of the mediation will be crucial for the future of gas production in the region.
