Family Alleges Foul Play After Wanted Accused Dies in Police Firing
The family of a wanted accused has cried foul after he died in a firing incident during a police action in Bangiwal village, Mehatpur. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) has ordered an inquiry into the incident that occurred late Tuesday night.
Incident Details
According to police sources, a team was conducting a raid to apprehend a suspect wanted in multiple criminal cases. The accused, identified as Gurpreet Singh, allegedly opened fire on the police party, prompting retaliatory action. In the exchange, Singh sustained critical injuries and later succumbed in the hospital.
However, family members and some villagers claim that the accused was killed in a staged encounter. They have demanded a thorough investigation and registration of a case against the police officials involved.
Villagers Protest
On Wednesday morning, dozens of villagers gathered at the Mehatpur Police Station, staging a dharna and blocking traffic for several hours. They raised slogans against the police and demanded justice for the deceased.
"We do not believe the police version. My son was unarmed and they shot him in cold blood," said the victim's mother, weeping. The protesters have threatened to intensify their agitation if no action is taken.
Police Response
SSP Jalandhar Rural has assured a fair inquiry. "We have ordered a magisterial probe into the matter. The body has been sent for post-mortem and all procedures are being followed. If any wrongdoing is found, strict action will be taken," the SSP said in a statement.
Police officials also released a statement claiming that the accused was a notorious criminal with multiple cases of robbery and assault registered against him. They said the firing was in self-defense after the accused attacked them with a weapon.
Legal Action
A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been registered. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have appealed for peace in the area.
The incident has once again raised questions about police encounters and the need for accountability. Human rights activists have called for video recordings of all such operations to ensure transparency.
