In a distressing incident that has sparked legal action, the Kochi city police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and initiated a thorough investigation into the alleged shooting and subsequent death of a stray dog. The event unfolded on Saturday night, with the Amabalamedu police station taking charge of the case.
Accused Identified and Allegations Detailed
According to official police records, two individuals have been named as accused in the FIR. They are identified as Peter and Saji K I. The FIR outlines that one of the accused operates a cow farm located in the Puttumanoor area. The stray dog in question was reportedly a frequent visitor to the farm premises, where it caused disturbances, including incidents of biting cows.
The FIR alleges that the two accused spotted the dog near Puttumanoor and, with the clear intention of killing it, shot the animal using an airgun. After being struck by the gunfire, the dog managed to flee the scene but was later discovered dead behind a house in Veloor, Puthencruz.
Police Action Triggered by Local Alert
The police investigation was set into motion after recording the statement of Sharath Shivaji, a local resident. Shivaji reported that residents in the area noticed blood stains on the road and observed the men in possession of an airgun. Uncertain about the exact nature of the incident, the concerned locals promptly dialed the emergency number 112 to report the situation.
Although it was later confirmed that a dog had been killed, the police decided to proceed with registering a formal case based on the evidence and statements collected. This decision underscores the authorities' commitment to addressing animal cruelty and ensuring legal accountability.
Legal Charges Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The FIR has been registered under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, reflecting the seriousness of the alleged offense. The charges include:
- Section 325: This pertains to mischief by killing, poisoning, or maiming any animal, highlighting the legal protection afforded to animals against such acts.
- Section 3 (5): This addresses criminal acts committed by several persons in furtherance of a common intention, indicating that both accused are being held jointly responsible for their alleged actions.
The registration of this FIR marks a significant step in the legal process, as it formalizes the allegations and paves the way for further investigation. The police are now tasked with gathering additional evidence, interviewing witnesses, and building a case that could lead to prosecution if the allegations are substantiated.
This incident has drawn attention to issues of animal welfare and the enforcement of laws designed to prevent cruelty. As the investigation continues, authorities are emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and prompt reporting in such matters to uphold justice and protect vulnerable animals.
