Violent Confrontation Under Kochi Bridge Leaves Two Police Officers Injured
High drama unfolded in Kochi on Saturday evening when a routine police check escalated into a violent physical altercation, resulting in injuries to two law enforcement officers. The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 PM beneath the Ernakulam North overbridge, where two siblings from Palakkad district clashed with police personnel after refusing to cooperate with identity verification procedures.
Arrest and Background of the Accused
Police have arrested the two individuals involved: Prince J, aged 29, and his brother Ginto J, aged 27. Both hail from Kaithachira in Mannarkkad, Palakkad district. According to initial statements, the brothers claimed to have traveled to Kochi in search of employment opportunities and were merely sitting under the bridge when police approached them.
Sequence of Events Leading to Violence
The confrontation began when Sub-Inspector Gladwin Edward, 36, of Ernakulam North police station, noticed the two men while passing by in a police jeep. SI Edward advised them that the location was unsafe and instructed them not to linger there. The brothers initially assured the police team they would leave, prompting the officers to depart the scene.
However, approximately fifteen minutes later, when the police team returned to the area for another matter, they found the brothers still present at the same location. Officers then approached them again and requested identification. When the accused refused to reveal their identities, police informed them they would need to accompany officers to the police station for verification.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused became agitated at this point and began verbally abusing the officers, challenging them to take them to the station if they could. When CPO R Manikandan, 38, who was driving the police jeep, attempted to make them enter the vehicle, the brothers physically resisted.
Violent Resistance and Injuries
The situation quickly deteriorated into physical violence. Prince J grabbed Sub-Inspector Edward's shirt and twisted his arm, while also striking him on the back with the blunt side of a mobile phone. Ginto J then hurled the same mobile phone at CPO Manikandan when he tried to intervene.
During the ensuing scuffle, the right-side mirror of the police jeep was broken. The brothers attempted to use shards from the broken mirror as weapons against the police officers, but the law enforcement personnel managed to subdue them. Both SI Edward and CPO Manikandan sustained injuries to their hands from glass shards during the altercation.
Police reported additional damage to the vehicle's wireless antenna during the incident. The accused were eventually overpowered and taken into custody.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
The arrested brothers were presented before a court and have been remanded in judicial custody. Police revealed that Ginto J is already an accused in multiple other cases, though specific details were not immediately disclosed.
Authorities have registered cases against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Kerala Police Act, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Investigations are ongoing to determine the precise purpose of the brothers' visit to Kochi and whether there were any additional motives behind their violent resistance to police questioning.
This incident highlights the risks police officers routinely face during what begin as routine checks and underscores the importance of public cooperation with law enforcement procedures. The injured officers received medical treatment for their wounds following the altercation.
