Kochi Police Launch Comprehensive Investigation Into Election-Period Drug Seizures

District police in Kochi have announced they will conduct a detailed and thorough investigation into multiple incidents of drug seizures that occurred during inspections held in the lead-up to the recent assembly elections. The police conducted these inspections through close collaboration with the excise department, resulting in significant narcotics discoveries.

Major Drug Seizures During High-Alert Election Period

Multiple major drug seizures happened over the past two weeks as police maintained high alert levels related to the elections. One of the most high-profile seizures occurred on March 28, when authorities confiscated a substantial quantity of drugs from a five-star hotel located in Kadavanthra. The seized substances included hybrid ganja, MDMA, methamphetamine, cocaine, and ecstasy pills.

Eight young individuals, including three women, were arrested in connection with this case. Police have launched a focused investigation into the background and history of the prime accused, identified as Shaji Fernando, who also goes by the alias Shaun. Fernando was the organizer of the party where the drugs were discovered.

Law enforcement sources revealed that an investigation is currently underway into cruise parties organized by Shaun, with suspicions of drug consumption at these events. Interestingly, those arrested alongside Shaun included professionals from various fields, such as businessmen, a lawyer, a dentist, and a nutritionist.

Additional Arrests and Seizures Across the District

Rural police also made significant arrests on Saturday, apprehending a group of youngsters in possession of MDMA. Police seized over 550 grams of MDMA valued at several lakhs of rupees from the accused individuals. On the same day, four additional youths, including one woman, were arrested with 3.5 grams of MDMA in their possession.

The accused in this latter case had reportedly purchased the narcotics in Bengaluru and traveled by motorcycle to Vaniyampara. They then continued their journey in a taxi car toward Kochi city with the intention of selling the drugs, but were intercepted and taken into custody at Angamaly. The narcotics were discovered hidden inside a specially made compartment within a flask.

Police Identify Key Links in Drug Network

According to police statements, these arrested individuals represent key links in the city's drug distribution network and are reportedly regular traffickers. A detailed probe is now focused on their antecedents and criminal histories. A source indicated that these suspects are likely to be sought in police custody now that the election period has concluded, allowing for more intensive interrogation.

Peaceful Elections Amidst Enhanced Security Measures

Meanwhile, police officials stated on Thursday that the assembly elections were largely peaceful throughout the district. Under the leadership of District Police Chief K S Sudarshan, strong and comprehensive security measures were implemented effectively. Approximately 3,000 police officers were deployed specifically for election security duties, along with 1,852 special police personnel.

Additionally, 94 group patrolling teams remained active throughout the election period to maintain order and prevent disturbances. The rural district contained 1,989 polling booths spread across six election sub-divisions, according to the official police statement.
