Police Nab Trio in Major Black Pepper Heist in Kodagu
In a significant breakthrough, the Virajpet Rural police have successfully apprehended three individuals linked to a high-profile black pepper theft case in Karnataka's Kodagu district. The arrests follow a meticulous investigation into the disappearance of a substantial consignment of black pepper, shedding light on a series of criminal activities across state borders.
Details of the Arrests and Stolen Goods
The accused have been identified as K B Shafiq K B, originally from Thithimathi Nokya village but currently living in 1st Perumbadi RG village; Darshan Nayak, aged 25, a resident of 1st Perumbadi RG village; and Mohammed Shakir, aged 31, a native of Mysuru who now resides in Edappadi, Manandavadi, in neighbouring Kerala. The theft occurred when Lehar Ganapathy, a resident of Ammathi Kannangala village in Virajpet taluk, reported that approximately 300kg of black pepper, stored at a coffee field, went missing on March 9. A formal case was registered, prompting an intensive police probe.
Authorities tracked down and arrested the trio in Panchavalli, located in Hunsur taluk of Mysuru district. During the operation, police seized two cars and one motorcycle that were allegedly used to commit the crime. In their interrogation, the accused confessed to selling 215kg of the stolen black pepper in Kerala. Further investigations revealed that the individuals have a history of criminal activities, including a registered case of bike lifting at Hunsur police station and another case involving 75kg of pepper theft and car theft at Suntikoppa station.
Civilian Gun Training Camp Launched in Madikeri
In a separate development, the Kodagu district police have initiated a civilian gun training camp in Madikeri, aimed at enhancing public awareness and safety. The programme was inaugurated by Superintendent of Police RN Bindu Mani, who emphasized the importance of understanding the Indian Arms Act. During her address, SP Mani highlighted that Kodagu holds the distinction of having the highest number of registered firearms in the state of Karnataka.
She noted that this civilian gun training initiative had not been conducted in the district for the past two years, making its revival particularly significant. This year, two teams are undergoing comprehensive training under the guidance of District Armed Forces police inspector HB Ganesh. The camp is designed to educate participants on responsible gun ownership and legal compliance, fostering a safer community environment.
The simultaneous efforts by police—cracking down on theft and promoting lawful firearm usage—underscore a proactive approach to law enforcement in the region. These actions are expected to deter future criminal activities while empowering citizens with knowledge and skills for personal security.
