Kolhapur Flower Merchant Found Dead After Abduction and Ransom Demand
In a tragic incident in Kolhapur, a 40-year-old flower merchant, Bharatesh Topgonda, from Danoli village near Jaysingpur, was discovered dead in agricultural fields hours after his family reported his abduction to the authorities. The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting concerns over crime and police responsiveness in the region.
Abduction Call and Ransom Demand
On Monday night, one of Topgonda's cousins received a distressing call from unknown individuals who claimed that his brother had been kidnapped. The callers demanded a ransom of Rs 25 lakh for his safe release, putting the family in a state of panic. Acting swiftly, Topgonda's relatives managed to arrange the money within a couple of hours and simultaneously informed the police about the situation.
However, the alleged abductors repeatedly changed the drop-off location for the ransom, creating confusion and delaying any potential resolution. After midnight, their calls abruptly ceased, leaving the family in a state of uncertainty and fear.
Discovery of the Body and Suspect Identification
During a frantic search conducted by Topgonda's relatives near the village, his body was found in an area known as Sheri Mala. The family had shared the call recording of the abductors with some villagers, who, upon hearing the voices, identified the suspects as individuals from Danoli with a known criminal history.
Police have since taken custody of two suspects from the same village. According to Amol Thakur, the sub-divisional police officer, these individuals have serious crimes registered against them, including attempted murder, and were familiar with the merchant. A postmortem examination is underway to determine the exact cause of death.
Allegations of Police Delayed Response
Local villagers have expressed anger over what they describe as a delayed response from the police. They claim that Topgonda's relatives were kept waiting until 3 am to file the official complaint. Furthermore, villagers assert that they were able to locate the body before the police arrived at the scene, and even Jaysingpur MLA Rajendra Patil Yadravkar reached the crime site ahead of the authorities.
Details of the Crime and Suspects' Background
Investigations revealed that an electric device, typically used to give shocks to bullocks during cart races, was employed to torture the merchant. Sources indicate that the two suspects had previously planned to abduct another prominent person from the village. When that plan failed, they targeted Topgonda instead, trapping him while he was on his way to his house in the farms, which is situated away from the main village area.
The deceased is survived by his mother, wife, two children, and a brother with learning difficulties, adding to the tragedy of the situation.
Community Reaction and Bandh Call
In response to the incident, residents of Danoli have called for a bandh on Wednesday. Ram Shinde, a village resident, voiced the community's frustration, stating, "The police have failed to respond. Had they acted on time, Bharatesh would have been saved. We also suspect that the two accused must have been working on the directions of someone else." This statement underscores the deep-seated concerns about law enforcement and potential broader criminal networks in the area.
