Crude Bomb Explosion Rocks North Kolkata Neighborhood
Residents of Paikpara in north Kolkata were jolted awake by panic early Saturday morning following a series of crude bomb explosions inside a locked room of a long-abandoned club, according to police reports. The incident, which occurred at approximately 6:11 AM, fortunately resulted in no injuries or casualties, but sent shockwaves through the densely populated locality.
Structural Damage and Discovery of Additional Explosives
A senior police officer detailed that eyewitness accounts indicated two to three crude bombs detonated within the sealed club room. The force of the blast was significant enough to cause the tin roof of the structure to collapse, with debris falling onto the fifth-floor roof of an adjacent residential building. In the aftermath, a thorough police search of the premises uncovered an additional five to six crude bombs, which were subsequently rendered safe by a specialized bomb disposal squad.
"The bombs appear to have been stored in this room, which has remained unused and locked for several years," the officer stated. "Our primary investigation is now focused on identifying who placed these explosives there and determining their intended purpose."
Local Panic and Immediate Police Response
The loud explosion immediately startled the community, prompting numerous residents to rush from their homes and congregate near the site out of fear and curiosity. Police swiftly arrived and cordoned off the entire area to secure the scene and begin their investigative procedures. Local resident Rangan Dev speculated that miscreants might have hidden the explosives in the derelict room with the intention of creating disturbances and unrest in the neighborhood.
Political Fallout and Accusations
The incident quickly escalated beyond a local law and order issue, triggering a sharp political exchange between major parties. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya leveled allegations that the bombs could have been planted by miscreants operating with the backing of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), suggesting a link to the upcoming state assembly elections.
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Trinankur Bhattacharya firmly rejected these claims, countering that the BJP was attempting to politicize an isolated incident that is currently under official police investigation. He further asserted that the overall law and order situation in West Bengal remains superior to conditions observed in several states governed by the BJP.
The discovery of stored explosives in a populated urban area has raised serious security concerns, with authorities intensifying their probe to uncover the origins and motives behind this alarming event.
