Kolkata Doctor Files Police Complaint Against App-Bike Rider for Abuse and Threats

A distressing incident involving a 30-year-old doctor from Shibpur, Kolkata, has highlighted safety concerns for passengers using app-based bike services. The woman, whose identity remains protected, has filed a formal police complaint alleging severe harassment by a rider after she refused to pay an additional Rs 20 beyond the fare displayed on the app.

Incident Details and Allegations

The incident reportedly occurred around 6:30 PM on February 7, following the doctor's drop-off in the Mominpore area. According to the complaint, the rider, identified as Md Qurassi, also known as Shabaaz Alam, received the trip fare through an online payment system. However, he subsequently demanded an extra Rs 20 from the passenger.

When the doctor firmly declined to pay the additional amount, the situation escalated rapidly. The rider allegedly began abusing her verbally and intimidating her with aggressive behavior. As he departed the scene, he drove his bike in a rash and negligent manner, striking her bag and hitting her feet, causing further distress.

Escalation to Digital Harassment

The harassment did not end with the physical altercation. A short while later, the doctor received messages on her phone from the rider containing what she described as "grave, insulting and vulgar language." These messages were not only directed at her but also targeted her mother, adding to the emotional trauma of the experience.

In her statement to the police, the doctor expressed shock and disappointment, noting that she frequently uses app-bike services but had never encountered such extreme harassment before. She explained that while riders sometimes request extra money, it is typically done in a polite manner. In this case, however, the rider acted as if he was being denied his rightful share, leading to the aggressive confrontation.

Police Response and Broader Implications

Local authorities have taken the matter seriously and registered a case based on the doctor's complaint. This incident raises important questions about passenger safety and the accountability of app-based transportation services in Kolkata. It underscores the need for stricter regulations and better grievance redressal mechanisms to protect users from such abuses.

The doctor's experience serves as a cautionary tale for other passengers, emphasizing the importance of reporting such incidents promptly to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences. As app-based mobility solutions become increasingly popular, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all users remains a critical priority.
