Tragic Accident at Alipore Complex Claims Security Guard's Life
A devastating incident unfolded on Thursday morning in Kolkata's upscale Alipore neighborhood, resulting in the death of a long-serving security guard. Govinda Kayal, 51, was crushed against a guard room wall by a car that unexpectedly accelerated while he was attempting to open the gate.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The tragedy occurred at approximately 11:20 AM on the premises of Alipore Height, located on Judges Court Road. According to eyewitness accounts, Kayal noticed the approaching vehicle and proceeded to open the gate as part of his routine duties. In a horrifying turn of events, the driver apparently confused the accelerator with the brake pedal, causing the car to surge forward violently.
The impact was catastrophic – the vehicle struck Kayal with tremendous force, pinning him against the guard room wall approximately five meters inside the complex entrance. The collision proved immediately fatal, with Kayal succumbing to his injuries on the spot before any medical assistance could reach him.
Victim and Perpetrator Profiles
Govinda Kayal, a resident of Ananda Abasan on Garia Station Road, had been employed as a security guard at the Alipore Height complex for nearly a decade. His sudden and violent death has left colleagues and residents in shock.
The vehicle involved was a private car bearing registration number WB01 BD1497. The driver, identified as 61-year-old Maheswar Thakur, had just dropped off the car owner, Rajendra Gupta, at his office and was returning when the accident occurred.
"Kayal saw the car coming and went to open the gate," explained another driver familiar with both individuals. "The driver may not have been accustomed to the new vehicle. Instead of applying the brakes, he accidentally accelerated. The car slammed into Kayal with tremendous force."
Aftermath and Investigation
Emergency responders transported Kayal's body to SSKM Hospital, where doctors officially declared him brought dead. Medical examination revealed multiple severe injuries concentrated on the upper portion of his body, indicating significant traumatic impact.
Alipore police officers swiftly took control of the situation, arresting driver Maheswar Thakur at the scene. Notably, witnesses reported that Thakur made no attempt to flee despite the gravity of the incident and displayed remarkably little emotion when police arrived, despite having maintained a cordial relationship with the deceased guard over time.
Law enforcement authorities have implemented comprehensive investigative measures, including sealing the complex gate and summoning forensic experts to examine the scene. The vehicle has been impounded for technical analysis to determine whether any mechanical faults contributed to the accident.
Ongoing Police Inquiry
Investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to reconstruct the precise circumstances of the collision. Key factors under examination include the vehicle's speed at the time of impact, visibility conditions at the gate area, and the exact positioning of the security guard when he was struck.
Police officials have indicated they will review available CCTV footage from both the Alipore Height complex and nearby surveillance cameras to establish a complete timeline of events. The driver's familiarity with the vehicle and his actions leading up to the acceleration will form crucial elements of the investigation.
Following standard medico-legal procedures, Kayal's body has been sent for postmortem examination, and his family has been formally notified of his tragic demise. The case continues to develop as authorities work to determine whether charges beyond negligence will be filed against the arrested driver.
