Kolkata Imposter Poses as Renowned Surgeon to Swindle Cash from Unsuspecting Victims

In a shocking series of events in Kolkata, an unidentified man has been allegedly impersonating a well-known ENT and head and neck onco surgeon, Dr. Indranil Chatterjee, to deceive multiple individuals out of cash. The imposter's fraudulent activities have sparked widespread concern, with police complaints lodged but the perpetrator still evading capture.

Deceptive Tactics Unfold Across Medical Establishments

The imposter has targeted various locations, including pathological laboratories, medicine stores, and doctors' clinics, where he introduces himself as Dr. Indranil Chatterjee. His modus operandi involves concocting plausible excuses, such as forgetting his wallet at home or losing his car keys with the wallet inside. Feigning embarrassment, he promises to return the borrowed money by the same evening, only to disappear without a trace.

Surgeon's Ordeal Begins with Unwanted Calls

Dr. Indranil Chatterjee, affiliated with the Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute, first became aware of the fraud on November 24 when an unknown caller demanded repayment of money. I was shocked and explained to him that I was in hospital the whole day, Chatterjee recounted. Despite filing a complaint at Narendrapur Police Station the following day, he continued to receive harassing calls from victims, even during critical surgeries, exacerbating his distress.

Online Fallout and Viral Misidentification

The situation escalated when some cheated individuals posted accusatory comments on Chatterjee's professional online pages. On Sunday, a doctor from Kestopur made a viral social media post labeling Chatterjee a fraud, accompanied by CCTV footage from his clinic showing the imposter in action. Although the post spread rapidly within the medical community, colleagues who know Chatterjee well noted that the man in the footage only bore a slight resemblance and was not the actual surgeon. This incident left me deeply disturbed, Chatterjee added, prompting him to file another complaint with Netaji Nagar Police Station near his residence, providing the CCTV evidence to authorities.

Recent Attempt Foiled at Hearing Aid Centre

On Wednesday, the imposter attempted his scheme at Hearzap, a hearing aid device unit in Garia. However, a staff member recognized that he was not Dr. Chatterjee and tried to apprehend him. The man quickly fled, boarding a bus to escape the scene. Pritam Barui, a staff member at the Garia unit, stated, I have the CCTV footage of the man and also video recorded him while fleeing our centre. I am ready to provide these to police so that he is arrested soon.

Ongoing Police Investigation and Community Alert

Despite multiple police complaints and surveillance footage, the imposter remains at large, continuing to pose a threat to the public. Authorities are urging vigilance and cooperation from the community to help identify and apprehend the individual. This case highlights the vulnerabilities in personal security and the importance of verifying identities in professional settings.
