Kolkata High Court Advocate Assaulted in Bhowanipore Over Traffic Dispute

A Calcutta High Court advocate, Sourindranath Bandyopadhyay, was subjected to a violent altercation near his residence on Townsend Road in Bhowanipore on Monday. The incident escalated from a simple traffic dispute to a physical assault, with the advocate being verbally abused, pushed, and threatened with a brick. The accused, truck driver and local resident Sanjay Gupta, was identified through CCTV footage and subsequently arrested on Tuesday.

Details of the Altercation and Assault

On Monday, as Bandyopadhyay was returning home from court, still dressed in his professional attire, he encountered a large trailer unloading floor tiles directly in front of his house. The trailer, occupying the narrow road along with another parked vehicle, completely blocked his access to his premises. When Bandyopadhyay requested Gupta to move the truck to allow passage, Gupta reportedly refused, stating he would only move it after the cargo was unloaded. This refusal sparked a heated argument, during which Gupta used foul language against the advocate.

The situation quickly deteriorated as Gupta allegedly pushed Bandyopadhyay and attempted to snatch his car keys. In a further escalation, Gupta picked up a brick and tried to strike the lawyer, threatening him with death. The incident has highlighted ongoing issues with illegal parking in the lanes of Bhowanipore, a concern frequently raised by local residents.

Following the assault, authorities reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which clearly captured the incident. This evidence led to the identification of Sanjay Gupta as the perpetrator. He was arrested on Tuesday, and legal proceedings are underway. The case underscores the challenges of traffic management and public safety in densely populated urban areas like Kolkata.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of how minor disputes can escalate into serious confrontations, emphasizing the need for better enforcement of traffic regulations and community awareness to prevent such occurrences in the future.
