Parking Dispute Escalates into Violent Mob Attack in Kolkata's Tangra Area

A minor disagreement over vehicle parking spiraled into a brutal confrontation in east Kolkata's Tangra locality late on Tuesday night, resulting in three members of a single family sustaining serious injuries. This violent episode has ignited fresh security apprehensions in the region, particularly against the backdrop of a heightened election atmosphere.

Incident Details and Immediate Aftermath

The altercation erupted at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Pulin Khatik Road, where a mob comprising nearly two dozen individuals reportedly descended upon the victims' residence. Armed with iron rods and blades, the assailants launched a ferocious assault that local residents have characterized as an act of revenge. The conflict originated when Vikram Khatik, a resident who routinely parks his car in front of his house, discovered that a neighbor had forcibly occupied the spot.

What began as a verbal spat over the parking space rapidly escalated out of control. Within minutes, a large group of neighborhood associates mobilized to attack Vikram and his family. The victims, identified as Vikram Khatik, Sabitri Khatik, and Sunny Khatik, suffered grievous injuries during the melee and were urgently transported to NRS Medical College and Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Extent of Damage and Allegations of Political Involvement

Beyond the physical assault, the attackers allegedly went on a rampage, causing extensive structural damage to the family's home and leaving the premises thoroughly vandalized. The gravity of the incident has been further intensified by allegations linking it to political infighting and criminal negligence. Preeti Khatik, Vikram's wife, has asserted that the primary aggressors are local political workers associated with the ruling party, despite the victims themselves being known supporters of the same political entity.

She further claimed that these attackers are involved in the illicit trade of marijuana and narcotics within the Tangra belt. According to the family, previous complaints regarding these unlawful activities were lodged with the local police station, but they expressed profound dissatisfaction with the official response, alleging that their grievances were dismissed or ignored by investigators prior to this violent escalation.

Political Denials and Ongoing Police Investigation

The Trinamool Congress has categorically dismissed claims that the attack is linked to politics. A local Trinamool functionary stated, Attempts to defame our party will be dealt with legally. An act of personal enmity should not see the party being dragged into it. Meanwhile, the Khatik family has reportedly received death threats following the attack, with Vikram pleading for police protection against what he describes as an imminent threat to his life.

While the Tangra police station has initiated a formal case based on a written complaint naming twelve primary suspects, the neighborhood atmosphere remains volatile. Senior officials from the Kolkata Police are reportedly monitoring the situation closely to ensure that the parking dispute does not evolve into a larger communal or political flashpoint as the election polls approach. No arrests have been officially confirmed yet, but police raids are currently underway to apprehend the ringleaders of the mob.
