Kolkata Police Apprehends Father-Son Duo in Beniapukur Attempted Murder Case

Kolkata Police has successfully arrested the primary accused, Mohammad Salman, along with his father, Mohammad Anwar, in connection with the Beniapukur attempt-to-murder case. The arrests were made approximately 24 hours after the incident was reported, marking a swift response by law enforcement authorities.

Arrest and Seizure of Illegal Arms

The duo was apprehended near Tiljala railway station on Wednesday morning as they attempted to flee Kolkata following the shooting. During the arrest, police officers seized illegal arms and ammunition from their possession. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar confirmed the recovery, stating, "One country-made pistol and one magazine with two live cartridges were found from them."

The accused have been formally charged under the attempt-to-murder section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and for illegal possession of arms. They were produced in court on Wednesday, with police seeking their remand for further investigation into the case.

Details of the Shooting Incident

The shooting occurred on Tuesday morning on Tiljala Road, located barely 300 meters from CNMC Hospital. The victim, identified as Mohammad Niaz, a 23-year-old mechanic, was allegedly called out of his home and shot multiple times. He sustained two gunshot wounds to his leg and was immediately rushed to SSKM Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to treat his injuries.

Root Cause: Dispute Over Stolen Cold Drinks

Police investigations reveal that the shooting was triggered by a dispute that began on Monday over the alleged theft of cold drinks from a local shop. An elderly woman who operates the shop discovered two bottles missing and accused a minor of the theft. The minor's mother vehemently denied the allegation and protested against the accusation.

In an attempt to mediate the situation, the shop owner called a man named Suraj from a nearby area. During the discussion, Mohammad Niaz questioned why an outsider from another locality was involved, leading to a heated argument that flared up again in the evening.

According to police reports, Mohammad Anwar supported Suraj during the altercation, which escalated tensions with Niaz. Later that night, Salman called Niaz outside under the pretext of having a conversation. Moments later, Niaz's family heard gunshots, indicating the violent turn of events.

Background of the Accused

Mohammad Salman has a prior criminal record, having been named in a robbery case previously. Additionally, he was injured in a bomb blast incident in the past, highlighting his involvement in unlawful activities. The arrest of both Salman and Anwar underscores Kolkata Police's commitment to tackling crime and ensuring public safety in the city.
