Kolkata Police Redraws Jurisdictional Boundaries for Second Time in Three Months
In a significant administrative move, Kolkata Police has once again revised the jurisdictional boundaries of three key police stations. This marks the second such revision within a span of just three months, highlighting ongoing adjustments in law enforcement coverage across the city.
Approval and Implementation of the New Directive
Commissioner of Police Supratim Sarkar has officially approved the latest reshuffle. A directive issued on Wednesday has effectively returned several areas, which were previously transferred to Alipore Police Station in November, back to their original police stations. This decision comes in response to practical challenges faced by residents.
Specific Area Reassignments and Details
The revised boundaries involve a detailed reassignment of specific localities. Under the new order, parts of Sudhir Basu Road, M M Ali Road, Bhukailash Road, Ibrahim Ali Road, and Ekbalpore Road have been reassigned to Ekbalpore Police Station. Simultaneously, areas including Fancy Market, Monsatala Lane, Monsatala Row, Harisabha Street, Kidderpore Road, and sections of D H Road have been transferred back to Watgunge Police Station.
Notably, the area surrounding the Ekbalpore Police Station building itself has been shifted from Alipore's jurisdiction back to Ekbalpore, streamlining administrative functions and local oversight.
Background and Rationale for the Changes
This latest adjustment follows a broader reshuffle implemented in November, which initially placed these areas under Alipore Police Station. That earlier reorganization also involved alterations to the boundaries of New Market and Park Street Police Stations. At that time, Lalbazar, the headquarters of Kolkata Police, expanded the jurisdictions of Alipore and Park Street while curtailing those of New Market, Watgunge, and Ekbalpore.
The decision to revert these changes stems from resident feedback. Many individuals reported significant difficulties in accessing Alipore Police Station due to the considerable distance involved, prompting authorities to reconsider the previous allocation for better public service and convenience.
Implications and Future Outlook
This repeated revision underscores Kolkata Police's responsiveness to community needs and its commitment to optimizing jurisdictional boundaries for enhanced efficiency. By realigning areas to more accessible police stations, the force aims to improve response times and foster stronger local connections. The move reflects an adaptive approach to urban policing in a dynamic metropolitan environment.
