Kolkata promoter arrested in extortion case tied to councillor

Kolkata: The Haridevpur police have arrested Abhijit Das, a prominent real estate promoter operating in South Kolkata, following a complaint of a Rs 4,00,000 extortion racket linked to jailed Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Ward 123 councillor Sudip Polley.

Details of the Complaint

According to police, a resident from Haridevpur filed a complaint alleging that Das and Polley demanded an inflated payment of Rs 6,00,000 — instead of the standard Rs 2,00,000 — to permit the construction of a boundary wall. Das allegedly pocketed a Rs 3,50,000 advance but halted work, later threatening the victim.

Arrest and Investigation

Following intense interrogation regarding syndicates operating in the area, police executed the arrest. Authorities are now processing custody transitions to deepen the investigation into the extortion racket and its connections to the jailed councillor.
