Elderly Man Seriously Injured in Alleged Road Rage Incident Outside Kolkata's Alipore Zoo

A 70-year-old man was seriously injured in an alleged road rage incident that occurred outside the Alipore zoo in Kolkata on Monday evening. The violent confrontation between a biker and a car occupant has led to police intervention and the arrest of the accused.

Details of the Incident and Police Response

The injured man, identified as Nirmal Kumar Dewan, suffered a significant head injury and was promptly admitted to a hospital, where he remains under medical treatment. Police arrested the accused biker, Akash Lavetti, on Tuesday based on a formal complaint filed by the victim's son.

According to police reports, the incident took place at the intersection near the zoo and National Library, within the jurisdiction of the Alipore police station. Investigators stated that Lavetti was waiting at a traffic signal on his motorcycle on Monday afternoon. When the signal turned green, he proceeded forward. At that moment, a car approaching from the same direction but on a separate lane allegedly collided with the motorcycle.

Escalation of the Confrontation

Police explained that Lavetti then stopped the car, which triggered a heated argument between the two parties. Dewan, along with his wife and son, were inside the vehicle, with the son driving. Initially, no one exited the car. The biker allegedly demanded that the occupants roll down the window. Once the window was lowered, Lavetti reportedly began verbally abusing the family and proceeded to break the car's side mirror.

In response, Dewan stepped out of the car to protest, which further escalated the dispute. The biker accused the family of damaging his motorcycle, claiming that the car had struck the bike and then reversed, causing parts of the motorcycle to break. During the ensuing argument, Lavetti allegedly pushed Dewan with considerable force.

Severe Injuries and Legal Action

The forceful push caused the 70-year-old to fall onto the road, where he hit the back of his head. He sustained severe injuries, and medical examinations later detected blood clotting in his brain. Lavetti allegedly fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Dewan was transported to the hospital by his son. Police noted that his condition was serious upon admission. Following the complaint lodged by Dewan's son at the Alipore police station, officers registered a case of attempted culpable homicide. Using the registration number of the motorcycle, police successfully traced Lavetti and arrested him during the night.

This incident highlights the dangers of road rage and the importance of maintaining calm on the roads. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure justice is served in this distressing case.
