Kolkata Police Intensify Probe into Baghajatin Terrace Murder
In a significant development in the Rahul Dey murder case, Kolkata police have uncovered crucial details about the weapon used in the crime. Two days after Dey was fatally shot on the terrace of an apartment in Baghajatin, investigators now believe that the alleged sharp shooter, Sukumar Rajak, procured the firearm from Sonarpur. Authorities suspect Rajak may have contacted a local criminal in the area to acquire the weapon, though he remains absconding at the time of this report.
Fifth Accused Apprehended and Arrested
The investigation has led to the arrest of a fifth individual connected to the case. Akash Mondal, also known as Mukhia, was detained by the Anti-Rowdy Section (ARS) of the detective department from Bentinck Street on Friday. Following intensive interrogation, he was formally arrested late on Saturday night.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Rupesh Kumar provided official confirmation, stating, "Further in the course of investigation, based on credible source information, the accused person Akash Mondal, a resident of Sultan Alam Road in Charu Market, was apprehended. After interrogation, he was detained and arrested on Saturday late night and produced in court the same day."
Forensic Analysis and Special Teams Deployed
In a meticulous move to gather evidence, police have sent the bullet that caused Rahul Dey's death to forensic experts for detailed analysis. This step aims to establish ballistic connections and strengthen the case against the perpetrators.

According to police sources, Rajak acted as a hired goon for the main accused, Jayanta Ghosh, who is identified as the primary executioner of the crime that occurred on Thursday. Ghosh, who accompanied Rajak to the scene, allegedly instructed him to carry out the shooting independently.
Rajak's Extensive Criminal Background Revealed
Probe findings have painted a grim picture of Sukumar Rajak's deep-rooted involvement in criminal activities. Investigations reveal that Rajak initiated his criminal career in the 1990s by joining a gang in the southern suburbs of Kolkata. Over time, he evolved into a principal shooter, with his criminal footprint extending across areas such as Tollygunge, Regent Park, Sonarpur, Narendrapur, and Baruipur.
A detective department officer disclosed, "Rajak began his criminal activities under a notorious goon from the southern suburbs. The accused shows his links run deep in the criminal world." Rajak has multiple cases registered against him, underscoring his long-standing engagement in illicit activities.
Links to Ransom Threats and International Drug Connections
Further investigations have uncovered that Rajak was associated with a group involved in extortion and ransom threats. Sources indicate that both Rajak and his mentor were previously arrested for murder and served time in the Presidency Correctional Home. Alarmingly, there are suspicions that Rajak may have assisted Myanmar's drug kingpin, hinting at potential international criminal connections.
Injured Accomplice and Ongoing Investigation
During the shooting incident, Rahul Dey's friend, Jeet Mukherjee, was also injured, adding another layer to the violent episode. As police continue to interrogate the four other arrested individuals, they have gleaned that their leader, Jayanta Ghosh, was present at the crime scene but delegated the actual execution to Rajak.
