A routine police operation to recover streedhan articles in Kolkata descended into chaos on Thursday when the complainant and her relatives allegedly assaulted police officers who were documenting the evidence. The incident occurred during a joint operation by Tiljala and Karaya police in a domestic dispute case.
Police Operation Turns Violent
The trouble began when a police team led by Sub-Inspector Md Karimul Hoque arrived at a residence on New Kasiabagan Lane following a domestic dispute complaint. The complainant had guided the officers to her clothes, utensils, and makeup sets, which were duly seized and documented as evidence. Female constable Tapasi Roy was recording the entire recovery process on her cellphone for court evidence when the situation escalated dramatically.
Jewellery Dispute Sparks Confrontation
The confrontation intensified when the complainant demanded the return of her gold and silver jewellery, which she claimed had been misappropriated. Her husband's brother strongly resisted this demand, leading to a heated exchange between the parties. The complainant, accompanied by her sister and brother, refused to leave the premises without the jewellery.
According to police reports, the situation turned physical when the complainant and her companions allegedly attempted to snatch the case diary from SI Hoque and the cellphone from Constable Roy who was recording the incident. Two police officers were assaulted during the altercation before additional police forces arrived to control the volatile situation.
Chaotic Scene and Recovery
During the chaos, a drawer was opened revealing gold-like items, with both parties immediately claiming ownership. The police ultimately seized the disputed jewellery, which will now be produced in court as evidence. Throughout the ordeal, the complainant and her companions reportedly obstructed police operations and threatened to file complaints against the officers for not siding with them.
Two of the accused were detained following the incident, and police officials confirmed that further action will be taken against the complainant and her companions for assaulting police personnel and obstructing government work. The entire episode has raised questions about the challenges police face during domestic dispute interventions, particularly in emotionally charged situations involving valuable assets like streedhan.
