Kolkata Transgender Artisan Seeks Police Protection After Alleged Abuse by Family
Kolkata Trans Woman Artisan Alleges Abuse, Seeks Police Help

A young transgender clay idol artisan from Kolkata has approached the police, alleging sustained mental and physical abuse from her elder brother and his girlfriend due to her gender identity. The 22-year-old victim, a resident of Behala, has sought official protection as she plans to leave her family home.

Allegations of Sustained Abuse and Harassment

The complainant, who is socially recognised as female since 2021, filed a detailed report with the Parnasree police station. She stated that she faced regular mental and emotional abuse from her brother and his girlfriend. The situation reportedly escalated after her brother's girlfriend began visiting their home frequently.

She lives with her parents and grandparents, sharing a room with her brother. The victim alleged that her brother damaged her delicate clay sculptures and blamed her occupation for her gender identity. She further claimed she was assaulted and thrashed by her brother, allegedly at the girlfriend's instigation, in front of other family members and neighbours.

Impact on Health and Plea for Safety

The alleged incidents have severely impacted the young artisan's physical and mental well-being, undermining her sense of safety within her own home. She stated that while her family initially did not object to her social transition, the environment turned hostile later.

Due to financial constraints, she has not undergone sex reassignment surgery. The complainant attached a photocopy of a medical document with her police complaint, indicating she sustained injuries from the recent abuse. She was treated and discharged from Vidyasagar State General Hospital.

In her plea to the police, she requested assurance that her family members would not threaten or harass her after she leaves the household.

Police Investigation Underway

Deputy Commissioner (Southwest-Behala) Rahul De confirmed that the police are actively looking into the serious allegations. "The complainant was treated and discharged from Vidyasagar State General Hospital. We are collecting evidence and recording statements," said DC De.

The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by transgender individuals in India, even within family settings, and underscores the need for institutional support against discrimination and abuse.
