Kolkata: Two Fresh Incidents of Violence Reported
Kolkata witnessed two fresh incidents of violence, with one case leading to the invocation of the stringent SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The Chitpore police registered a case under this act following an assault on a Dalit family on Dilarjang Road.
First Incident: Assault on Dalit Family
According to the complainant, a group of ten men, including Birju Singh, Rajen Chauhan, and Vicky Singh, ransacked a structure that her family had set up on the footpath to operate a chicken shop. The mob physically assaulted the woman, her father, and her brother. They also smashed their mobile phones and outraged her modesty. The attackers hurled derogatory casteist slurs, prompting the police to hand over the investigation to an assistant commissioner of police, as per legal requirements.
Second Incident: Attack on Fish Trader's Family
In another incident, the family of a local fish trader was attacked by a gang of six to seven men, including Shiv Abhishek, Arpan Gaud, and others. The assailants vandalized and looted a shop belonging to a 64-year-old relative of the trader. The trader's wife and her niece were also assaulted during the attack.
Authorities are investigating both cases, and further details are awaited.
