Labourer dies after falling from 27th floor in Navi Mumbai

A 29-year-old labourer died after falling from the 27th floor of a building undergoing redevelopment in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, on Tuesday around 4 pm. The Vashi police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) under the relevant section of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which mandates police inquiry into unnatural deaths.

Victim Identification and Incident Details

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Imran Ibrahim Khan. According to a complaint lodged by co-labourer Mohammad Kamran Ibrahim Khan (20), the incident occurred while Imran was performing PVP work in the lobby on the 27th floor of B-Wing of the building, which is being redeveloped by Advika-Arihant construction firm in Sector 9A, Vashi. Imran lost his balance while fitting a screw with a drill machine and fell from the high-rise, landing on the ground. He sustained severe multiple injuries to his head, hands, legs, and other body parts. He was rushed to NMMC Hospital in Vashi, where he was declared brought dead.

Allegations of Safety Violations

MNS city president Gajanan Kale has alleged that the Arihant-Advika redevelopment building is a death trap, claiming that two workers have died in two months during redevelopment by the builder. Kale stated, "On March 4, a labourer named Pawan Kumar Lakhichand Mahato (21) died tragically while construction work was being carried out at the same building. I had filed a complaint with the NMMC commissioner, Town Planning Department, and the Deputy Commissioner of Labour, citing safety rule violations. The Deputy Commissioner of Labour inspected the site and issued a prohibition order on April 13, asking the developer to stop work as no worker safety rules were being followed."

Kale added, "However, the developer continued construction, and on April 28, another labourer, Mohammad Imran Ibrahim Khan, died after falling from the 27th floor as he was not provided with safety gear like a harness and headgear."

Demands for Action

Kale demanded immediate action, including revoking the commencement certificate (CC) of the construction firm. He also called for substantial financial assistance to the families of both deceased labourers and urged the Deputy Commissioner of Labour and NMMC Commissioner to file a criminal case against the developer and contractor. He warned that MNS would protest at NMMC and Labour Department offices if no action is taken.
