Land dispute turns fatal in Namakkal, man hacked to death

A 65-year-old man died after a land-access dispute turned violent near Tiruchengode in Namakkal district on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Sridhar, a resident of Velampalayam in Irayamangalam.

Background of the dispute

Sridhar owned five acres of agricultural land, while his neighbour Velusamy owned 2.5 acres. The two families had been locked in a prolonged dispute over access to their fields and the ownership of a coconut grove that both claimed stood on their respective land. The matter was already sub judice in a local court.

How the incident unfolded

According to a police officer from Molasi station, an argument on Saturday escalated into a physical clash. During the altercation, a man named Kesavaraj attacked Sridhar with a sickle, inflicting severe cut injuries on his hands and legs. Sridhar collapsed due to heavy blood loss.

Neighbours rushed him to the Molasi Primary Health Centre, from where he was referred to a private hospital in Tiruchengode. As his condition deteriorated, doctors decided to shift him to a private hospital in Coimbatore for advanced treatment. However, Sridhar succumbed to his injuries on the way.

Postmortem and investigation

The body was sent to Namakkal Government Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem examination. Police have registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation. Further legal proceedings are underway.
