Latehar District Rocked by Alleged Gang Rape of Tribal Teenager
A deeply disturbing incident has shaken the community in Latehar district, where a 16-year-old tribal girl was allegedly subjected to a brutal gang rape by five youths. According to a senior police officer who spoke on Saturday, the horrific event unfolded on Thursday night, casting a shadow over the region.
Details of the Alleged Assault Emerge
The victim, in her official statement to authorities, recounted that the attack occurred during a wedding ceremony. She stated that five youths from her own village forcibly took her to a nearby jungle under cover of darkness. It was there, in a remote and isolated location, that the alleged gang rape took place.
The officer detailed the aftermath, explaining, "The accused threatened her with severe consequences if she spoke out and then abandoned her in the dense jungle around midnight. Somehow, the traumatized girl managed to find her way to a relative's house, where she courageously narrated the entire harrowing ordeal."
Police Action and Investigation Underway
Despite the incident occurring on Thursday, the First Information Report (FIR) was formally lodged with the police only on Saturday, indicating a delay in official reporting. The police have acted swiftly following the complaint.
The victim has been sent for a comprehensive medical examination, a critical step for both her care and the collection of forensic evidence. Authorities have assured the public and the victim's family that a major operation is in progress.
"A full-scale manhunt has been launched to apprehend the accused individuals," the investigating officer affirmed. "We are utilizing all available resources, and we are confident they will be in custody very soon." The police are treating the case with utmost seriousness, given the gravity of the allegations and the vulnerability of the victim.
This case has highlighted urgent concerns regarding the safety of women and girls, particularly in tribal communities, and the responsiveness of the justice system in rural districts like Latehar.
