Police Encounter Leads to Arrest of Notorious Gang Members
In a significant breakthrough, Punjab Police apprehended two operatives of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang following an intense gunfight at Ghaggar Bridge on the Ambala-Dera Bassi highway. The incident occurred approximately 20 kilometers from Chandigarh, with authorities confirming the arrests on Wednesday.
The identified suspects are Sharanjit Singh alias Honey from Motemajra and Aman Kumar from Khijargarh in Zirakpur. According to police reports, the duo attempted to escape by turning onto a dusty track along the Ghaggar riverbank when challenged by security personnel.
Exchange of Fire and Recovery of Weapons
A brief but intense exchange of gunfire ensued between the police team and the accused. Both gang members sustained bullet injuries during the confrontation and were subsequently hospitalized under police supervision.
Law enforcement officials recovered significant evidence from the suspects, including two .32 caliber pistols, ten live rounds, and a motorcycle used by the criminals. The weapons seizure highlights the armed and dangerous nature of the apprehended individuals.
International Gangster Connections Revealed
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav revealed that the arrested duo was operating under directions from foreign-based gangster Goldy Dhillon, a known associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate. Preliminary investigations indicate their involvement in a shooting incident that occurred in Rajpura last month.
Additional Director General of Police for the Anti-Gangster Task Force Promod Ban provided crucial information about Dhillon's international criminal activities. The foreign-based mastermind was reportedly behind the daylight killing of an Indian-origin industrialist in Abbotsford, British Columbia in October this year.
Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Hans explained that the operation was launched based on credible intelligence about the suspects' movements. Joint teams comprising AGTF personnel and Mohali police officers, under the leadership of Dera Bassi DSP Bikramjit Brar, successfully intercepted the duo near Ghaggar Bridge.
"When signalled to stop, the accused fired at the police party in an attempt to flee. The police team retaliated, and the duo sustained bullet injuries. They were overpowered and arrested," SSP Hans stated during the press briefing.
Criminal History and Legal Proceedings
Deputy Inspector General of AGTF Gurmeet Singh Chauhan confirmed that both arrested individuals have substantial criminal backgrounds. Aman Kumar already faces two FIRs under the Arms Act, indicating his prolonged involvement in illegal activities.
Police have registered a formal case under BNS Sections 109, 132, 221, and 3(5) along with Section 25 of the Arms Act at the Dera Bassi police station. The comprehensive charges reflect the seriousness of their offenses.
DGP Yadav commended the AGTF and Mohali Police for their swift and effective action, emphasizing that Punjab Police remains committed to dismantling organized crime networks controlled by foreign-based handlers. The successful operation has exposed the cross-border connections of gangsters and reinforced the state's determination to maintain law and order.
