Ajmer Court Imposes Life Sentence for Heinous Acid Attack on Mother and Daughter

In a landmark verdict, a court in Ajmer on Wednesday delivered a life imprisonment sentence to a 28-year-old man for perpetrating a brutal acid attack on a woman and her 12-year-old daughter at Chittorgarh railway station approximately one year ago. This vicious assault resulted in the young girl suffering complete vision loss in one eye and partial vision impairment in the other, marking a tragic outcome from the incident.

Details of the Attack and Legal Proceedings

According to Public Prosecutor Naresh Kumar, the horrific event unfolded on April 25 of the previous year when the victims boarded a train from Ajmer bound for Chittorgarh. The following day, at Chittorgarh railway station, the mother and daughter went to an area near the rail tracks to relieve themselves. It was there that the accused, identified as Mohammad Ismail, a resident of Mau district in Madhya Pradesh, approached them.

Ismail opened a bottle he was carrying and deliberately poured acid on both the woman and her daughter, causing immediate and severe burns. The aftermath of the attack led to extended hospitalizations for both victims, with the mother sustaining burns across her entire body and the daughter enduring the devastating eye injuries that have permanently affected her sight.

Court's Ruling and Compensation Order

Beyond the life imprisonment verdict, the court took a compassionate step by directing compensation for the young girl, ordering a payment of Rs 2 lakh to aid in her recovery and future needs. This decision underscores the judicial system's recognition of the long-term physical and emotional trauma inflicted by such crimes.

The case highlights the severe consequences of acid attacks, which often leave victims with lifelong disabilities and psychological scars, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of laws and better support mechanisms for survivors. The sentencing serves as a stern warning against such acts of violence, emphasizing justice for the victims and their families.

This ruling comes amid broader discussions on women's safety and legal protections in India, with acid attacks being a particularly cruel form of gender-based violence. The court's firm stance in this case is seen as a step toward deterring similar offenses and providing solace to those affected by such tragedies.
